In einem kalifornischen Städtchen findet die Polizei ein ermordetes Ehepaar. Wie es scheint, blieb der Täter nach der Tat noch längere Zeit im Haus seiner Opfer und kleidete sich neu ein. Da es schon zwei ähnliche Fälle entlang des Highways 99 gibt, schaltet sich das BAU-Team ein. Auf der Jagd nach dem "Highway 99-Killer" finden die Profiler schnell eine heiße Spur: Der Mörder scheint sich mit Güterzügen durchs Land zu bewegen.
