Preparing for Lent
Sean Fletcher visits Pershore Abbey in Worcestershire to find out how the community is preparing for Lent. He assists The Rev. Claire Lording as she burns last year's palm crosses ready for the Ash Wednesday service. He hears how members from the local churches go onto the streets offering to pray for passers-by at the Ash Wednesday service. It's part of a Church of England initiative called "Pray One For Me" and the Bishop of Worcester explains how he came up with the idea. Ahead of Shrove Tuesday, Sean joins the Brownies in the Abbey's community centre where they are holding a pancake party for friends and family. James Lusted is in Oxford to meet Icolyn Smith the eighty-nine year old lady who has run the Oxford Soup Kitchen for the past 30 years. Twice a week she cooks meals for the homeless and those in need. Much of our music comes from Pershore Abbey where Katherine Jenkins leads the congregation in one of the UK's favourite hymns and the choir, Voces8, perform Drop, Drop, Slow Tears.
