Washington High School. Steve's best friend, Cedric Jackie Robinson, the school's physical education teacher and coach, has arranged a teaching job for Steve. Steve enters the office and is greeted by a student, Stanley Kuzsnacki. Stanley tells Steve his friends call him ""Bullethead"" because he has a bullet in his head. Cedric enters the office to find Steve and introduces him to the principal, beautiful Regina Grier, explaining they are friends from college. Principal Grier is unimpressed and demands Steve enter her office. Cedric has problems of his own: living at home with his mother and her new boyfriend is getting very difficult. Though excited by the chance to make a good impression, Steve is stunned to learn, due to budget cuts, the school no longer has a band. Steve bets Regina he put a band together before the banquet. If Regina wins, Steve must wear Bermuda shorts and sing ""I Will Survive"" while gardening in Regina's yard. Dressed in a fine suit, Cedric is playing the part, too. Schmoozing Regina, Cedric discusses his new plan for diversified physical education, until he realizes Regina doesn't cast a vote for Teacher of the Month. On his way to play the piano at regina's church, Steve gets arrested and thrown in jail with Cedric. - - - Steve lets Regina down by failing to proofread the school's newsletter before it is printed. Remorseful, Steve must find a way to make amends. When her church pianist runs off on the eve of a performance, he offers to fill in. Yet, unwilling to trust him, Regina refuses and continues looking for someone else. Making matters worse, Cedric is angry with Steve because he won't share the apartment's lone parking space. Bullethead criticizes his style, saying he can do better. As Bullethead approaches a beautiful blonde, Steve and Romeo watch him in action. Although Cedric turns on the charm, Juanita makes it clear she is interested in Steve and later she even finds an excuse to drop by their apartment to get Steve's autograph. While visiting, she drops a photo from Steve's apartment in her purse. Meanwhile, the students try to raise money for a field trip by selling candy. Bullethead hatches a plan to earn some fast money and asks Romeo to help. They meet at the local billiards hall, where Bullethead's prowess with the cue stick convinces Romeo they can raise money all the money they need and more if only they had a larger amount to bet. The kids have been assigned the task of creating a short film for a contest, documenting life at Booker T. Washington High. The school submitting the winning film will win a complete audiovisual system. At the request of its old road manager, Doc, the Hi-Tops agree to assemble at Steve's for an important announcement. While suspecting it could be about a reunion tour, they are surprised to learn that Doc is getting married and wants them to be in the wedding. A girl introduces herself as Ashley Hawkins…his daughter. Dumbfounded, Steve faints on the spot. Revived, Steve does his best to deny it. However, when shown a collection of some old love letters to her mother and a locket he hasn't seen in many years, he has a hard time denying Ashley Hawkins is whom she claims to be. The next day, Steve arrives in class to find all the students showering Bullethead with compliments. Steve is uncomfortable with the trip because the Hi-Tops have received numerous nominations, but have never been inducted. A visit from her college rival, Tiffany, has Regina upset, especially since the principal has lied about having a wealthy doctor for a husband and her skill as a gourmet cook. To help Regina to impress Tiffany (who is also a successful author with a high-priced lawyer for a husband), Steve agrees to pose as the doctor while Cedric promises a delicious home-cooked meal for her guests. Romeo weighs his feelings for his once-heavy platonic friend Aisha who spent her summer at a weight-loss farm and now is lovely, fit and sexy. - - - With the beginning of the new school year, Steve believes it's finally time for him and Regina to get together. Intending to start off right, Steve greets her with a red rose and a ticket to the theater, asking for a date. She accepts. Romeo and Bullethead also enjoy the first day of class as an opportunity to check out the new girls in school. They notice one immediately, but don't recognize her as their classmate Aisha, who looks fantastic after a summer at weight loss camp. Steve complains to Regina, who suggests Steve take a lesson from Cedric's loving relationship. Meanwhile, after she's asked on a date, Aisha needs help learning to dance. Romeo offers to assist her and, as they dance together, Romeo wonders why he isn't the one taking her to the event. Back at the apartment, Steve and Cedric discuss their problem. Steve still won't back down from his assertion that Lovita spends far too much time at their apartment. Cedric suggests Steve is simply jealous of his success with Lovita. Steve asks him to move out. School tough Coretta ""The Ox"" Cox takes a liking to Romeo and scares off his regular honeys. - - - When Romeo can't find a date for the school dance, Bullethead and Aisha mention Coretta ""The Ox"" Cox, the toughest girl in school, has scared off the rest of the her classmates. When Coretta finally finds Romeo and asks for a date, despite his objections, he can't muster the courage to refuse her. Steve invites Regina to watch the Luther Vandross concert on cable and to dinner at his apartment. Overhearing, Lovita invites herself as well and informs Cedric of their new plans. With everyone now present, Lovita unveils her homemade chocolate chip cookies. They taste horrible. Having accepted the date, Romeo finds himself in an uncomfortable position: Coretta makes him carry her books and walk her to class. When Romeo asks Steve for advice on how to break the date, Steve simply encourages him to be honest with Coretta. Romeo then tells Coretta he doesn't want to go to the dance with her. A

But, at his first rehearsal, Steve immediately regrets extending the invitation when he discovers Romeo cannot sing. Bullethead finds himself in some trouble when a bully, Deandre, verbally picks on him. Upset by the abuse, Bullethead seeks Cedric's help. Cedric and Steve offer some pointers on how to change the situation. Meanwhile, Lovita plays matchmaker, posting Regina's phone number on the singles board at her church. Although her intentions are good, Regina asks Lovita to back off. After seeing just how much the choir means to the student, Steve can't bring himself to tell Romeo the truth. However,

For a fund-raiser, Steve tries to reunite the Hi-Tops, but learns they've formed a new band without him. So he decides to make some beautiful new music with Regina. Meanwhile, Bullethead decides to quit school to work full time at his new job in the mall. - - - Trying to earn $200 to buy a pair of basketball shoes, Bullethead offers to sell Steve some incense. Steve suggests he get a job. Needing entertainment for an upcoming charity banquet, Regina turns to Steve, who agrees to organize a Hi-Tops reunion. But after learning his old band has reunited without him, Steve takes up Cedric's offer to sing with him in the show. Cedric isn't content with a back-up role and quits, so Steve decides to do it solo. While fending off Lovita's criticism for his treatment of Cedric, Steve must also answer to Regina for his apparent lack of a band for the benefit. But he proposes she be his back-up singer and Regina agrees. Taking Steve's suggestion to heart, Bullethead gets a job at a shoe store.

Aisha and Romeo stand guard as Bullethead, using the schools public address system, makes a plea for his girlfriend to take him back. Regina understands his pain and offers encouragement, helping to boost his self-confidence. Steve is surprised to find a pair of his old Hi-Tops bandmates at Club Mystique: T-Bone and Clyde, now touring as the Rib Tips, who are planning to audition as well. After some trash-talking, each is convinced they will earn the job. But when the Rib Tips see Steve and Cedric practicing, they realize they can't win and hatch a plan to prevent Soul Teachers from auditioning. Steve and his former Hi-Tops bandmates learn that the pint-size rap singer wants to release a new version of the band's song ""Break Me Off a Piece of That Funk."" The young singer also wants the Hi-Tops to appear in the single's music video, which would include a dance routine choreographed by Regina featuring students from Booker T. The sixth and final season begins as Regina pulls the plug on faculty displays of affection on school grounds. The principal's newly minted relationship with Steve prompts the edict after the music man tries to kiss her at school. Regina ushers her co-workers into her office and tells them that they all need to set an example for the students regarding proper behavior. She is adamant that the students never find out that she is ""breaking off a piece for 'Big Daddy'"". However, she fails to heed her own advice and soon Bullethead catches her in a clinch with Steve in her office. Elsewhere, Cedric is upset by wife Lovita's uncharacteristic lack of interest in him, and finds odd ways to channel his energies.

Lovita advises Steve to give Regina a duplicate key to his apartment to show how serious he is about their relationship. Meanwhile, Lydia downplays her intelligence to help her boyfriend, Arthur, feel better about himself, as Lovita begins to feel left-out when her girlfriends seem to pay more attention to Cedric than to her.

Steve's parents are coming to town to visit, but to avoid the pressures of marriage he excludes Regina from their dinner plans, leaving Regina offended and Steve unable to explain. Cedric advises Steve to write down his feelings on paper to help him later explain the reasoning behind his actions; unfortunately, his venting mistakenly gets sent to Regina via e-mail.

Steve plans an elegant dinner party with friends in celebration of his relationship with Regina, but when Regina starts assuming responsibility and takes over with the details and planning of the dinner party, Steve reminds her that ""Big Daddy"" is in charge at ""home"" and Regina is in charge at work, which leads to an argument about her bossy demeanor. Meanwhile Romeo tries to decide whether to go to college or go to work with his father driving a cab, as Lydia muses on her college dorm assignment to roommate, Laquitia Jefferson.

Steve is a little too enthusiastic in his glee over Romeo, Bullethead, and Lydia's impending graduation, especially when Lydia wins the class-valedictorian race and Romeo is voted the senior speaker for commencement. Meanwhile, Steve and Regina compete with each other over who can book the coolest celebrity to speak at the commencement ceremony.

The series concludes with Regina accepting a great job opportunity in California and asks Steve to leave his life in Chicago, and move with her. Steve has to decide whether or not to let the love of his life walk out of his life forever, or take a chance on love in a far away place.
