Käpt’n Barnius, Professor Tintling und der Arzt Peso Pinguin leben gemeinsam mit ihren fünf Teamkollegen in einer Forschungsstation. Von dort aus erkunden sie den Ozean und retten Meeresbewohner, die sich in Gefahr befinden. Die Oktonauten erforschen auch das Verhalten der Tiere. Nachdem Peso gerade seinen letzten Patienten verarztet hat, bringen ihm Käpt’n Barnius und Dana einen ganzen Haufen neuer Patienten. Eine Schar Pelikane hat einen riesigen Müllteppich mit einem Fischschwarm verwechselt und sich im Plastikmüll verheddert und ihn zum Teil auch verschluckt. Während Peso sich um die armen Wasservögel kümmert, machen sich die anderen Oktonauten daran, den Müll einzusammeln, um ihn später im Oktopod zu recyceln. Währenddessen schwimmt ein riesiger Fischschwarm auf sie zu und die Oktonauten geraten mitten in einen Futterstreit hungriger Schwertfische.

Die Oktonauten und die Seeschweine
Die Oktonauten wollen das Oktopod gerade in der Nähe eines tiefen Seegrabens aufsetzen, als sie eine riesige Herde grasender Seeschweine unter sich entdecken. Sofort brechen sie die Landung ab und suchen ein sicheres Plätzchen. Erschreckt stellen sie fest, dass die Seeschweine geradewegs auf den Graben zulaufen. Da Seeschweine nicht schwimmen können, säßen sie nicht nur in der Falle, wenn sie dort hineinfielen, sie würden auch verhungern, da es dort unten nichts zu fressen für sie gibt. Also versuchen sie, die anstürmende Herde aufzuhalten und das Schweinefutter von der anderen Seite zu holen.

Die Oktonauten und die Yeti-Krabbe
Trixie ist ganz aufgeregt. Es ist Zeit für die erste große Funktionsprüfung der Guppy X. Doch die Oktonauten werden das Unterwasserfahrzeug nicht irgendwo auf Herz und Nieren prüfen sondern in der Dunkelzone des Ozeans. Dabei stoßen sie fast mit den Schloten einer Hydrothermalquelle zusammen. Während sie noch durchatmen, obwohl es dort schrecklich nach faulen Eiern stinkt, klettert heimlich eine Yeti-Krabbe an Bord der Guppy. Die weiße flauschige Yeti-Krabbe Klaus kann nicht nur nichts sehen, sie hat die Guppy auch für einen Fels gehalten, in dem es etwas zu fressen gibt.
