Emma wurde als kleines Mädchen aus einem Dorf in Yorkshire entführt, um in ein Bordell in London gebracht zu werden. Doch konnte sie fliehen und kam bei Kelly Stowner als Dienstmädchen unter, eine Erzieherin in Rente. Kelly brachte ihr Hausarbeiten, Lesen und Schreiben bei. Als nun William Jones, ein ehemaliger Schützling, Kelly besucht, verliebt er sich in Emma. Doch gehört er einer reichen Familie an, als deren Stammhalter er eine Adelige heiraten soll. Eine solche lernt er mit Eleanor Campbell auf einem Ball kennen und diese zeigt auch Interesse an ihm. Nun zeigt auch der indische Prinz Hakim Atawari, ein alter Freund Williams, Zuneigung zu Emma. Als er jedoch bemerkt, wie nahe sich die beiden stehen, unterstützt er ihre Beziehung.

Episode 1
Eleanor, still in love with William, runs into him at an outdoor party. Meanwhile Emma, who has taken up work at a large countryside estate belonging to the Mölders family, immigrants from Germany, is being falsely accused of theft.

William visits the Crystal Palace with Eleanor and his siblings, but memories from his last visit together with Emma prevent him from concentrating on Eleanor. Meanwhile, the Mölders celebrate Ilse's birthday. That evening, the servants of the estate have a private feast.

Episode 3
Dorothea Mölders visits her friend Mrs. Trollope together with Emma. William, scolded by his father for neglecting his duties, attends a charity performance of Romeo and Juliet in Grace's stead, not knowing that Eleanor will be there too. Eleanor chases after William.

The Molders plan on visiting London and intend on taking Emma. Emma tries to get out of it. William begins to court Eleanor. Eleanor's fiery, older sister, Monica, comes to London for vacation.

Mrs. Molders and Emma are out shopping when they come across Mrs. Trollope. Mrs. Molders insists on Emma attending Mrs. Trollope to an engagement party for her eldest son. Meanwhile, William and Eleanor plan their engagement party.

Emma and Mrs. Trollope attend the engagement party for her son, who turns out to be William, Mrs. Trollope's real name being Mrs. Jones. When Emma, not wearing her glasses, finds out whats going on, she faints in front of William.

Episode 7
After spending the night with William, Emma flees to Mrs. Jones first thing in the morning and tells her the whole story. William chases after her but arrives just too late. He decides to cancel the engagement with Eleanor. Emma, full of regrets, runs off from the Mölders household after overhearing the other maids gossiping about the cancelled engagement and Hans is sent to bring her back.
