Episode 1
A young woman called Yukimura Chizuru travels from Edo to the capital, Kyoto, in search of her missing father. Once there, she's nearly attacked by a monster who is thirsting for blood. The monster, a rasetsu, is slain by group of men feared as assassins, the top officers of the Shinsengumi—Hijikata Toshizou, Okita Souji, and Saitou Hajime. Chizuru stays with the Shinsengumi to search for her father, Koudou. Then, one day, they receive testimony that someone has seen her father near a certain shop. When Chizuru arrives, she gets caught up in a scuffle...

Episode 2
After learning of a plan to attack the Shinsengumi Command Post, Hijikata and the others decide to raid a meeting of Imperial Loyalists, which include men from Choushuu. The meeting will be held at either Shikokuya or Ikedaya. It's impossible to know which based solely on the information provided by Yamazaki Susumu and the other intelligence agents. With no other choice, the Shinsengumi splits into two squads. Kondou takes ten men to Ikedaya, while Hijikata takes twenty four to Shikokuya, but then...

With the raid on Ikedaya, the Shinsengumi's fame has soared overnight. While on a recruiting trip in Edo, Kondo and the others speak to Ito Kashitaro, who then joins the Shinsengumi. Kondo admires Ito, but the other men harbor more complicated reactions to the situation—Sannan, in particular. While he is still a lieutenant commander, he's unable to follow the path of a swordsman, and with Ito installed as their military adviser, he feels more and more that there is no place for him in the Shinsengumi. Chizuru is worried about him. Then, one day, things take an unexpected turn...

Sannan has been using materials left behind by Kodo to continue to try to improve the medicine in secret. He drinks the medicine and transforms into something which is no longer human. After seeing the wound Sannan infected on Chizuru heal in an instant, Hijikata asks her if she's a rasetsu, but...
Later, the commotion over Sannan adds to the decision to move the Shinsengumi headquarters to Nishi Hongwanji. Chizuru continues to search for her father, but she is unable to find any clues to his whereabouts. Then one day, Chizuru happens to overhear Okita's secret.

One night, a soldier who has been turned into a rasetsu attacks Chizuru. Hijikata charges in and manages to save her by a hair's breadth, but something strange happens to Sannan. At the same time, Kazama Chikage and his cohorts raid the Shinsengumi headquarters. Kazama approaches Chizuru. What could his objective be...?

The shogunate orders the Shinsengumi to move their headquarters to the Fushimi Magistrate's Office to combat the Satsuma and Choshu factions. A few days later, Kondo is shot on his way back from attending a war council, leaving him on the verge of death. The news makes Okita drag himself, weakened by his illness, to Sannan's rooms.
Day by day, the battle with the Satsuma-Choshu forces grows fiercer, and the Shinsengumi is made to feel the disadvantage of their inferior numbers. Amidst all of this, Hijikata comes to a decision.
