1. Staffel 1 (16 Episoden • 2005)
Die erste Staffel von „The Ultimate Fighter“ feierte am 17. Januar 2005 Premiere. Sechzehn Mixed-Martial-Arts-Kämpfer wurden eingeladen, an der Show teilzunehmen, in der sie zusammenlebten und in zwei separaten Teams trainierten, die von den UFC-Halbschwergewichtskämpfern Chuck Liddell und Randy Couture gecoacht wurden. Die Teams traten in physischen Herausforderungen gegeneinander an, moderiert von der Sängerin Willa Ford, um zu bestimmen, welches Team das Recht hatte, einen seiner Kämpfer gegen einen Gegner seiner Wahl in derselben Gewichtsklasse antreten zu lassen, wobei der Verlierer ausschied.
Das Finale wurde am 9. April 2005 live übertragen, in dem die beiden Finalisten jeder Gewichtsklasse um einen Vertrag mit der UFC kämpften. Es war die erste UFC-Live-Übertragung im Free-TV und erzielte eine beeindruckende Gesamtzuschauerquote von 1,9. Die Serie wurde im Frühjahr 2005 auch in Großbritannien auf Bravo ausgestrahlt. 2. Staffel 2 (14 Episoden • 2005)
Die zweite Staffel von „The Ultimate Fighter“, der Reality-TV-Serie über Mixed Martial Arts, umfasste sowohl eine Schwergewichts- als auch eine Weltergewichtsklasse mit jeweils anfänglich neun Kämpfern. Als Trainer fungierten die Welter- und Mittelgewichtschampions Matt Hughes und Rich Franklin. Randy Couture, Trainer der ersten Staffel und ehemaliger UFC-Champion, moderierte und konzipierte die Team-Challenges. Das Gewinnerteam durfte jeweils einen seiner Kämpfer für die Ausscheidungskämpfe nominieren. Das Finale wurde am 5. November 2005 ausgestrahlt und erzielte mit einer Gesamteinschaltquote von 2,0 einen neuen Rekord für die UFC. Obwohl die Staffel bereits 2005 auf DVD veröffentlicht wurde, erschien sie am 18. September 2007 erneut.
Bis heute ist Staffel 2 die einzige, in der alle Kämpfe von der Nevada State Athletic Commission als professionelle MMA-Kämpfe anerkannt wurden.

3. Staffel 3 (14 Episoden • 2006)
Die dritte Staffel von „The Ultimate Fighter“, der Reality-TV-Serie über Mixed Martial Arts, feierte am 6. April 2006 direkt im Anschluss an die „Ultimate Fight Night 4“ Premiere. Sechzehn Kämpfer traten gegeneinander an, trainiert von den verfeindeten Ex-Champions Tito Ortiz und Ken Shamrock. Das Finale wurde am 24. Juni 2006 ausgestrahlt und erreichte mit einer Gesamtbewertung von 2,0 Punkten den damaligen UFC-Rekord.
Im Vergleich zu den vorherigen Staffeln gab es einige Regeländerungen. Team-Challenges wurden abgeschafft. Alle Kämpfer mussten einen Vorkampf gewinnen, um ins Halbfinale zu gelangen. Damit begann das K.o.-System bereits zu Beginn und nicht erst gegen Ende der Staffel. Der erste Vorkampf wurde durch einen Münzwurf entschieden. Alle weiteren Kämpfe der ersten Runde wurden von dem Team bestimmt, das den vorherigen Kampf gewonnen hatte. Jeder Kampf ging über zwei statt der üblichen drei Runden. Bei einem Unentschieden nach zwei Runden gab es eine fünfminütige Entscheidungsrunde. In diesem Fall beruhte die endgültige Entscheidung der Punktrichter ausschließlich auf der dritten Runde. Die Trainer durften zwei Assistenztrainer mitbringen, während in vorherigen Staffeln vom UFC engagierte Assistenztrainer für beide Teams gearbeitet hatten.

As coaches, Tito and Ken train a new army of mixed martial artists from the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain. 4. Staffel 4 (14 Episoden • 2006)
"The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback" ist die vierte Staffel der Mixed-Martial-Arts-Reality-TV-Serie "The Ultimate Fighter". Die Premiere fand am 17. August 2006 direkt im Anschluss an die UFC Fight Night 6 statt. Das Finale wurde am 11. November 2006 ausgestrahlt.
Diese Staffel unterschied sich vom üblichen "Ultimate Fighter"-Format. Statt UFC-Neulingen bestand die Besetzung aus Kämpfern, die bereits in der UFC gekämpft, aber noch keinen UFC-Titel gewonnen hatten. Die Gewinner im Mittel- und Weltergewicht erhielten einen Titelkampf in ihrer Gewichtsklasse, ein Preisgeld von 100.000 Dollar und einen Sponsorenvertrag mit Xyience im Wert von ebenfalls 100.000 Dollar. Anstelle von Coaches fungierten prominente Trainer und UFC-Kämpfer als Berater. Randy Couture, Georges St-Pierre, Marc Laimon, der Grappling-Trainer aus den Staffeln 1 und 2, und Mark DellaGrotte, Kenny Florians Kickboxtrainer, standen den Kämpfern zur Seite. Die Teilnehmer lebten weiterhin abgeschieden in einem Haus in Las Vegas.

Die fünfte Staffel von „The Ultimate Fighter“ bot das gewohnte Format: Sechzehn MMA-Kämpfer wurden in einem Haus in der Nähe von Las Vegas, Nevada, isoliert und trainierten gemeinsam, während sie an einem K.-o.-Turnier teilnahmen. Der Gewinner erhielt einen sechsstelligen UFC-Vertrag. In dieser Staffel kämpften alle Teilnehmer im Leichtgewicht und wurden in zwei Teams aufgeteilt, trainiert vom ehemaligen UFC-Leichtgewichtschampion Jens Pulver und dem ehemaligen UFC-Weltergewichts- und Leichtgewichtschampion B.J. Dana White welcomed the 32 fighters, consisting of 16 featherweights and 16 bantamweights, to the show at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. He introduced them to the coaches, middleweights Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Michael Bisping.

Bisping and Miller make their official team picks. Miller then makes the first fight, an underdog match that will feature his fighter Bryan Caraway against Marcus Brimage.
