Die achtundzwanzigjährige Hiroko Matsukata ist Redakteurin eines Nachrichtenmagazins. Diesen Job nimmt sie sehr ernst und so ist sie mit Eifer bei der Arbeit. Hält sie es für nötig, kann sie sich in den Worcaholic-Modus befördern, um ihre Leistungsfähigkeit zu steigern. Dieser Lebensstil eines arbeitsamen Japaners hat jedoch gravierenden Einfluss auf ihr Privatleben: Hiroko hat so gut wie keines. Sie raucht zu viel und kann keine richtige Beziehung zu ihrem Freund aufbauen.
