Sakamichi Onoda ist ein verweichlichter Neuling an einer Oberschule, der vollkommen vernarrt in Anime ist. Eigentlich wollte er dem Anime-Klub beitreten, doch konnten ihn zwei Klassenkameraden, die bereits bekannte Rennradfahrer sind, davon überzeugen, dem Rad-Klub einen Besuch abzustatten. Onoda Sakamichi, a diehard anime fan, bikes 90 kilometers to and from Akiba to buy anime goods. Enrolled at Chiba Sohoku Public High School, he plans to join the anime club, hoping to make friends.

Imaizumi challenges Sakamichi to a race up the school's steep rear gate slope. To spice up the competition, Imaizumi agrees to join the anime club if he loses. Sakamichi gives it his all, hoping to reform the club.

Shinkai's demon sprint allows Hakone to slowly pull ahead of Sohoku even further. Not wanting to lose any ground or teammates, the seniors of Sohoku step to the front of the line and decide to rotate the lead while gaining ground.

The teams reach the final climb of Day 3, a massive mountain stage. Hakone makes it's move and sends Manami, Toudou, and Fukutomi up the final mountain.

Naruko refuses to give up the lead as Sohoku races up the mountain. He uses his sprinters climb to help the team gain momentum, and just as he appears to be tired Naruko decides to debut his new move: the Armstrong Climb. Naruko's spirit ignites to crowd to cheer for Sohoku, but it has some unexpected consequences.

Thanks to Naruko's sacrifice Sohoku manages to catch Hakone. Fukutomi admits he thought Sohoku would fall apart and yet they managed to catch up, but he says they can never prevail without a true ace. Imaizumi declares that he is the new ace and he will take first.

Midosuji catches up to Onoda and company and is able to get ahead of the ace climbers. Seeing no other choice Toudou sends Manami ahead to keep Midosuji contained.

Episode 18
Manami reveals how he has advanced so far in races, by using nature and feeling it out. When he senses a gust of wind coming Manami uses it to propel himself ahead of Midosuji.

Episode 19
Onoda fails to hold off Midosuji. Then he remembers the words from Naruko about how he clings to someone when racing and doesn't let go. Onoda begins to cling to the back of Midosuji's bike and is tricked into running off the road by Midosuji.

Episode 20
Sakamichi reaches the lead pack and joins Imaizumi, and the pair reaffirms their desire to win. Without a moment's delay, Midousuji begins his attack!

Episode 21
Midousuji attacks again and again, and Imaizumi holds him back. As their battle gains speed, the race enters the Fuji Azami Line's only downhill section!

When Imaizumi's frame breaks during his battle against Midousuji, Manami quickly overtakes him. Realizing he cannot catch Manami himself, he entrusts Sakamichi with the soul of Sohoku.

Just as Sakamichi is looking anxious, former Sohoku captain Kinjou appears before him...

Ahead of them, Hakone Academy catches up to Teshima and Sakamichi, and first-year climber Shinkai Yuto bares his teeth! After passing Teshima, Yuto issues a challenge to Sakamichi. Frustrated by his lapse in judgment, Imaizumi speaks harshly to Teshima, while the sound of something breaking can be heard in his heart... Meanwhile, Hakone Academy and Kyoto Fushimi head into the sprint. It looks to be a race between Izumida and Midousuji... but instead a surprising man approaches...!

As the captain of Hakone Academy and the team's ace sprinter, he has fulfilled his heavy responsibility. Though Kishigami fails to satisfy his desire for muscles, he accepts his defeat.

Sakamichi's emotions rise as he watches them. After their race, Makishima tells Onoda to stay true to himself, and Onoda's resolve is renewed. The 3rd and final day of the tournament in which Sakamichi and Team Sohoku compete for their second consecutive championship arrives, and Sakamichi pedals as hard as he can to catch up to Imaizumi as quickly as possible.

Amidst the turmoil and confusion, Teshima is swallowed up by the pack. They desperately search for their partner, but betrayed by Midousuji, the pack loses speed. However, Teshima finds a ray of hope when he meets up with Aoyagi who falls back to help him. With well-coordinated teamwork, they chase after the riders ahead of them!

However, when they enter the flats between the peaks, Hakone Academy’s captain Izumida pulls his team, and they suddenly accelerate! Ace sprinter Izumida’s finely-honed muscles and spear-like racing leave Sohoku behind in an instant!

Before the race, Captain Teshima told Sakamichi that he wouldn’t be the mountain ace at this Inter-High so the team could focus on taking out Hakone Academy’s formidable climber Manami early during their first attack. Imaizumi, who has awakened as Sohoku's ace, pushes past his limits, and unable to seize victory, Midousuji falls behind and collapses on the rainy sidewalk...

Two kilometers from the finish line, Sakamichi receives his final orders from Imaizumi and is entrusted with winning the race. He steels his resolve and chases after Manami. In early spring before the Inter-High, Sakamichi and Manami bump into each other at the aquarium Team Sohoku visited on their way back from a race. There they promise to go all out against each other at the summer's Inter-High. When they end up racing for the finish line on the final day, despite their bewilderment and their teams' victories weighing upon them, they are delighted by their fated race against each other.

Kuroda, who rides shrewdly when he activates his switch, endures the pain in the leg before finally trusting Manami with his own hopes and sending him off. Manami spreads his wings and accelerates. Meanwhile, as Sakamichi falls behind, for some reason a song begins playing in his head!

When Manami was distraught over losing to Sohoku at last year's Inter-High, she didn't know what to say to him. One year later, the class rep sensed Manami was finding an answer as the race approached.

When Makishima, the man he respected most, suddenly left him, Sakamichi fell into a slump. Kinjou invited him to the beach where he encouraged him by recounting his own experience.
