Mikado Ryugamine ist unzufrieden mit seinem langweiligen Leben und zieht auf die Einladung eines Freundes hin nach Tokio, in den Distrikt Ikebukuro. Schnell stellt sich heraus, dass der Bezirk voll mit unsichtbaren Gangs und unerklärlichen Geistern ist, und sich Vergangenheit und Gegenwart hier die Hand geben.

Mikado folgt dem Rat seines Freundes Masaomi und zieht in den Tokioter Distrikt Ikebukuro, um an einer neuen Highschool ein neues Leben zu beginnen.

Bei der Begrüßungsfeier in der neuen Schule werden Mikado und sein Freund Masaomi dem Mädchen Rio vorgestellt, dessen Entführung sie beobachtet hatten.

Als der Slasher Anri angreift, erzählt Izaya Celty, dass die Klinge des Slashers eine dämonische Waffe ist, deren Geschichte mit ihrer eigenen verwoben ist.

Nachdem der Journalist Shuji Niekawa vom Slasher angegriffen wurde, nimmt die Waffe von ihm Besitz und versucht, Anri anzugreifen und Shizuo seine Liebe zu gestehen.

Masaomi schöpft den Verdacht, dass ehemalige Mitglieder der Blue Squares die Dollars infiltriert haben, und stattet deswegen Kyoheis Gang einen Besuch ab.

Entgegen Masaomis Befehlen greifen die gelben Schals die Dollars an. Anris Versuch, einen Bandenkrieg zu verhindern, macht die Sache jedoch nur noch schlimmer.

Als die gelben Schals entdecken, dass Anri das Mädchen ist, das bei dem Treffen aus ihrem Versteck geflohen ist, kommen ihr unerwartete Retter zu Hilfe.

Als die gelben Schals sich von Masaomi abwenden, muss er sich selbst gegen sie und Shizuo verteidigen, den die Yellow Scarves angeschossen haben und für tot halten.

2. Staffel 2 (36 Episoden)
Obwohl in Ikebukuro endlich wieder Frieden eingekehrt ist, sind viele der seltsamen Ereignisse zu alltäglichen Anblicken geworden. Ein Beispiel dafür ist die ständige Verfolgung von Celty Sturluson, der kopflosen Reiterin, durch die Polizei. Zudem hat jemand ein hohes Kopfgeld auf sie ausgesetzt, was die Mitglieder verschiedener Gangs dazu motiviert, ebenfalls nach der übernatürlichen Kreatur zu suchen. Währenddessen wird Mikado Ryūgamine von Aoba Kuronuma, einem mysteriösen Unterklässler mit unbekannten Absichten, angesprochen, der Mikados wahre Identität zu kennen behauptet.
Doch Ikebukuros Ruhe währt nicht lange, denn eine neue Bedrohung taucht in Form eines Mörders auf, der unter dem Pseudonym „Hollywood“ bekannt ist und bei jedem seiner Verbrechen eine andere Maske trägt. Als sich die verschiedenen Ereignisse erneut als miteinander verbunden herausstellen, stürzt Ikebukuro in einen weiteren Konflikt, der die gesamte Stadt ins Chaos zu stürzen droht.

Half a year has passed. The city of Ikebukuro seemingly remains unchanged, but foreign elements are slipping in, the serial killer known as “Hollywood” being one of them. The fuse to a new series of events begins to smolder!

Due to her appearance on TV, Celty Sturluson has gained even more attention and 10 million yen is being offered to uncover her identity. Meanwhile, Raira Academy welcomes its new students, which includes Mairu and Kuriri, Izaya Orihara’s sisters.

The idol Ruri Hijiribe and actor Yuhei Hanejima; two people who, despite being hugely popular, remain a mystery. A chance meeting gives them reason to reveal their secrets to one another. Meanwhile, the various situations in Ikebukuro begin to intersect.

While transporting some mysterious luggage, Celty attempts to escape the biker gangs out to claim the 10 million bounty that’s been placed on her. Caught up in the chaos, Mairu and Kururi join with Kyohei and the others.

With the uproar over the bounty settled, the city appears to be peaceful. However, the sparks of a new uproar begin to light, one after another. The womanizing leader of the Toramaru gang visits Shizuo, and Celty receives a request from the Awakusu…
