Paul und Jamie sind typische New Yorker. Er ist ein engagierter Filmemacher, der am liebsten Dokumentationen über die Schwäne im Central Park oder den letzten Milchmann von Brooklyn dreht, sie arbeitet in einer PR-Agentur und ist überaus ehrgeizig. Beide leben in Manhattan und sind dementsprechend ebenso smart wie neurotisch. Doch trotz der Anforderung des Berufslebens gelingt es den beiden, ihre Ehe frisch zu halten und langsam in ihre Elternrolle hinein zu wachsen – und das, obwohl ihnen wohlmeinende Freunde, überbesorgte Verwandte und das Leben an sich immer wieder Steine in den Weg werfen.
