Alors qu'on fête en grandes pompes l'anniversaire de Justine de Solar, un enfant fait irruption dans le salon du château, au milieu des invités, en poussant d'étranges cris. C'est Guillaume, le fils sourd-muet que Madame de Solar cache honteusement dans une vieille masure au fond de la forêt. Peu de temps après l'incident, le garçon est abandonné dans la campagne et recueilli par l'abbé de l'Epée. Afin de pouvoir communiquer avec lui, ce dernier va enseigner à Guillaume, rebaptisé Joseph, le langage des signes. Dans le même temps, il se bat pour que l'enfant soit rétabli dans ses droits et ses parents punis pour leur lâcheté...
