Avant la guerre, Cécile dispensait des cours à tous les enfants non scolarisés du petit village de Saint-Roch. Mobilisé à l'annonce de la Première Guerre mondiale, son mari Pierre Delpeuch, ne reviendra jamais du front et Cécile se retrouve seule à élever son fils et à pourvoir aux travaux de la ferme. Sylvaine, quant à elle, a également perdu son mari à la guerre. Le temps d'une éphémère trêve, elle a vu débarquer dans sa ferme une poignée de soldats allemands et français coupés de leurs régiments respectifs et bloqués dans une tranchée. Pierre Delpeuch était de ceux-là. En 1919, Sylvaine vient à Saint-Roch pour découvrir la femme de ce poilu qu'elle a accueilli à sa table et dont elle s'était amourachée, un amour platonique que le front lui a pris comme il a pris son mari. Alors qu'elles auraient pu se haïr, les deux femmes vont au contraire unir leurs efforts pour redonner vie à Saint-Roch.
