17 octobre 1961. En réponse au couvre-feu instauré par le préfet de police de Paris, Maurice Papon, le FLN organise une manifestation pacifique qui rassemble près de trente mille Algériens descendant en cortège vers le centre de la capitale. La réponse des forces de l'ordre sera terrible. Installée aux portes de Paris, la police arrête des milliers de manifestants. Ceux qui ont échappé aux arrestations sont chargés par les policiers qui ouvrent le feu sur le pont de Neuilly. On compte plusieurs dizaines de victimes dont certaines sont même repêchées dans les eaux de la Seine. Le téléfilm reconstitue cette soirée tragique en racontant le destin d'une dizaine de personnages, policiers, Algériens, journalistes ...
