Jahrhunderts. Ein aus Martinique stammender Arzt begibt sich in ein kleines Dorf in der Charente, um dort die Nachfolge eines Amtskollegen anzutreten. Schon bald wird er mit der Feindseligkeit und den Vorurteilen der Bewohner konfrontiert, denen die Hautfarbe des Neuankömmlings wichtiger ist als seine beruflichen und menschlichen Qualitäten.
